My attempt at building a daily drawing habit

  1. I had recently purchased an iPad Pro along with an Apple Pencil. And it was the start of the year. I decided to jump on the #drawdaily bandwagon. The only rule I set for myself was to try to spend at least 10 minutes drawing every day.

  2. I wasn’t really sure where to start so I just opened up the Sartorialist website and started drawing from reference.

  3. I set up an instagram account (@drawmmeti) to share my drawings and hold myself accountable.

  4. Those initial days, it was a challenge figuring out what to draw. I just tried drawing people, cartoons or things I like. Soon after, I fell into a groove of drawing characters and quotes from some of my favorite TV shows like The Office.

  5. Then I discovered the #sbsadrawingaday prompts organized by Sketch Book Skool. This was a game-changer for me! Using prompts helped create just the right amount of constraints while still allowing me to be creative. I discovered more prompts and challenges that kept me going. But I wasn’t too strict about following the prompts every single day and sometimes just drew whatever I felt like.

  6. #FolkloreandFairyTales (from @custombysophy) and #100DaysofSketching were some of my favorite drawing challenges! I think I discovered my style through them.

  7. I actually ended up being picked as one of the winners for the #100DaysofSketching challenge where we were awarded access to a paid drawing course by Keshart! This was such a great acknowledgment of my effort and an even bigger motivator to keep it going.

  8. I’ve always wanted to draw comics like Poorly Drawn Lines. This was one of the outcomes I was hoping for through this exercise. And I was super happy to discover that side of me during this journey.

  9. I ended up drawing for over 200 days within the year. I discovered what I think is my style, new artists and a community full of inspiration and encouragement. My biggest learning was to focus on making the effort, and not worry about the outcome. And the results will come. All the best for your drawing journey!
